The Society for Peace Unity and Human Rights (SPUR) is a 16 year old human rights organisation operating in Australia, dedicated to protecting the unitary status and the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. We have been active in countering actions denigrating Sri Lanka and challenging the spread of malicious misinformation.
It is 194 years since the Rebellion of Uva or the Kandyan Uva Rebellion of 1818, to free the country from the British, occurred. It broke out on November 26. The Rebellion was brought under control after 778 rebels were either executed, imprisoned or banished from the country.
A majority of the member states of the United Nations has commended Sri Lanka for its progress in the resettlement of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the development of the conflict-affected areas at the United Nations Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review of Sri Lanka in Geneva.
Immigration Minister Chris Bowen says the decision to return a group of Sri Lankans who arrived on an asylum seeker boat earlier this week will help undermine the people smuggling trade.
